Upon contacting Cirrus Equine Appraisals and completing the contract, the client will be asked to provide copies of the following documentation regarding to the horse, as applicable:
*pedigree
*registration certificate
*training history
*race record
*competition record
*breeding record
*health certificate
*proof of ownership
After receipt of the first 50% of the appraisal fee, an on-site inspection will be performed, at which time the appraiser will verify the identity of the horse via photographs, cross-referenced with the paperwork provided. A video of the horse in hand or under saddle may also be made for reference during the research process.
When the inspection is completed, the appraiser will then research the subject equine and the sales of other comparable horses within a relevant time frame. Sales of comparable horses might be found via private, word-of-mouth sales, auctions, or breed registries. Once suitable comparables are found, the appraiser will develop the report in accordance with USPAP guidelines. The appraiser will also complete an IRS form 8283 for use by the Client if the horse is to be donated to a non-profit organization.
The entire process generally takes about 2-3 weeks, with scheduling of the on-site inspection driving the completion date.
